Uisge Beatha (Water of Life)

(I wrote this song about my trip to Orkney, Scotland. Orkney is a land that spoke to me from the first photo I saw. Once I set foot on her shores I knew I was “home”. I had many, deep spiritual experiences there. As I cried on the ferry while she slowly disappeared from my sight, I promised two things: I would get back to see her and I would write a song about her. This is the song.)

(Uisge Beatha is a Gaelic phrase translated literally as “water of life”.  It’s where we get the word “Whisky”.)

—-
V1
Beyond the stones, among the heather she waits for me. She always waits for me.
Sit on a cliff and feel the ocean pound away, I waste the day with the wind upon my face.
Close my eyes and I can’t wait.

Chorus

Uisge Beatha in my brain, water of life running through my veins,
Turn the barley, mash the grain
I’m coming home again.
—-

V2
I wander to the edge of town, I watch the clouds
As they gather overhead
I feel the stones and touch the past, it’s fading fast

She calls to me, oh how she calls to me (ch)
—–

V3
Scapa Flow, the rings of stone, Skara Brae, the sacred graves.
The raging sea, inside of me.
Set me free, oh set me free. (chorus)
